Well, our son Shawn looks to become the 3rd married child in the family. Yesterday Shawn officially asked Karey Haddock to marry him.
He wanted to ask her at the site of their 1st date at the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy, UT. So Shawn enlisted help from some mutual friends to pull off the moment when he asked her. Andrea and Andrew, recently married themselves, worked with Shawn to create a diversion surprise to get Karey to the Aquarium. Supposedly Karey was taking Andrea to the Aquarium to be surprised by her husband, Andrew. Shawn told Karey he would not be able to return from Snow College until Wednesday because of responsibilities with the student paper. Thus she needed to pull of the Andrea surprise without him. However, Tuesday Shawn had returned home with plans to be there at the aquarium ready to jump out of some corner as Karey took Andrea through the aquarium to be surprised by her husband.
Shawn had picked up the ring on Saturday a few days earlier and given it to his Mom for safe keeping and to avoid the temptation of “spilling the beans”. He did manage to show the ring to all the immediate members of the family. The ring has a center diamond with 3 smaller diamonds running down each side. It turned out very nice! The center diamond was purchased a few years back by Sandy after Josh got married. She wanted to have a diamond for each of her children. She already had diamonds for Sara and Emily but did not have any for our 2 boys who were unmarried. She had the diamonds put in ear rings which she has worn ever since until Shawn needed his. Maybe she’ll now put the remaining diamond for Spencer in a pendant to wear for at least the next 9 years.
Back to the engagement.
Shawn arrived a little before 6:30pm with Andrew to get setup. To his great surprise, the aquarium had closed at 6pm. Panicked Shawn ran to the door and pounded on it begging someone to come to the door. When someone opened, Shawn explained he needed them to let him in long enough to propose to Karey. He must have been persuasive as they agreed to let him in as long as he proposed quickly and not back where he originally intended to hide.
Karey and Andrea arrive about 15 minutes later. Karey said it looked odd since all the lights were out and there were no cars around. But Andrea assured her the aquarium must be open. The door was unlocked and they went inside. 1st Andrew appeared and then Shawn appeared. Karey was happy to see Shawn and just assumed he had been able to return early and gave him a big hug. She did say Shawn looked very nervous.
Shawn produced some roses and started to get down on one knee. That’s when it dawned on her what was happening. A hug later and through Karey’s tears, Shawn managed to get on one knee and produce the ring box.
They then proceeded to leave the aquarium as promised since it was closed. However, a worker called them back indicating the Manager wondered if they might want to dance to a song over the speaker system. That was very nice of the manager to allow them to come in long enough for the proposal and then to play them a song. Afterwards, they went to dinner at the Mayan which was close by.
Later in the evening Shawn proudly came home with a fiancée and her ring to show off to the family. I don’t know if I was supposed to act surprised but it didn’t matter as they were too caught up in each other to notice. It looks like the wedding will be the 1st weekend in July at the Manti Temple. Shawn has a tuition scholarship at Snow College because of his work on the student newspaper and has already paid for his apartment through the Winter Semester.
